New York City PS 54

This new pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school for 600 students joins the residential community to a major thoroughfare and civic institutions.

The school has two entrances. Students enter from the residential area to the West. A community entrance opens off of the main vehicular access street to the East. The building is compact and linear, to allow the greatest area of open space around the school for playgrounds, and for light, air and security.

The colors of brick relate to masonry colors of the nearby residential buildings. Each floor has a theme color expressed for corridors and student lockers. Corridors terminate in views of the surrounding neighborhood. Classrooms are grouped by grades with special functions located at the ends of the building.
