New York City PS / IS 48

This 800-student public school for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade is sited to maximize green space for playing fields and playgrounds.

The school is organized around a central courtyard with a playground for the youngest children. The central corridor from the entrance to the gym and gymatorium looks out into the courtyard. An art installation celebrating the natural world lines the corridor. Early childhood classrooms and the cafeteria also share views of the courtyard playground.

The 350-person gymatorium, a hybrid space for athletic and performance events, is designed with fixed and retractable seating to accommodate its dual purpose. When seats are retracted, the space transforms into a gymnasium for physical activities. The school is oriented to provide maximum sunlight to classrooms.
