Michael has over 35 years of experience as a designer, programmer, and manager of planning studies, renovations, adaptive reuses, and new buildings for educational and cultural clients. He joined the firm in 1983 and became a Partner in 1997.
Michael has developed finely tuned methodologies for the evaluation of historic sites and buildings for adaptive reuse, renovation, and addition. He focuses on preserving what is valuable and memorable while finding compatible ways to transform less important elements to meet current and future needs. His projects include Yale University Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, The Rockefeller University Welch Hall Library, SUNY College at Geneseo Doty Hall, and University of Chicago Neubauer Collegium for Culture & Society. He is an active member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, New York State Preservation League, and New York City Landmarks Conservancy, and participates in the Association for Preservation Technology Northeast Chapter to remain current with trends in historic preservation techniques.
Michael has programmed over 10 million square feet of space. His innovative analytical programming and planning techniques focus on intense utilization of existing space, shared space and flexible multi-use space strategies. He has developed clear informative graphic approaches to charting program findings that bolster client and community engagement. His work has been recognized by the AIA as one of the fundamental acts of sustainability: making better use of what we have and building the most efficient new buildings that we can possibly design.
Michael has lectured about historic building renovation/transformation and sustainable design at the AIA National Convention, AIA / CAE Learning Environments Conference, International Society for College and University Planning Conference (SCUP) as well as numerous North Atlantic SCUP Conferences. Michael is the 2021 Chair of the National AIA Committee on Architecture for Education.
Michael received a Bachelor of Environmental Design from University of Florida and a Master of Architecture from North Carolina State University School of Design. He is a licensed architect in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Illinois, and a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
